Self-care can easily be defined as activities that make you feel good – bubble baths, massages and pedicures. But what I believe most women, especially mothers, are really needing the type of self-care that deepens their connection with themselves, heals their mental, emotional and physical wounds, and improves the quality of their life overall. Sometimes this means doing things that don’t make you feel so good at the time, like, for example, saying no to someone when you are already overcommitted, or standing up for yourself when you are being treated unfairly. But, there are also some really awesome self-care activities that will improve your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing that do feel wonderful to indulge in, like relaxation for example!
What are the benefits of relaxation?
When you have a giant to-do list, spending time on relaxation can feel unproductive. But there are so many benefits, that I guarantee it’s not only a worthwhile investment of your time, but it’s also crucial for wellbeing in today’s modern times. Parents in particular need to include regular relaxation into their lives, as they are “working a job” that is practically 24/7 – supporting children who require care 24/7.
Research has found that relaxation techniques have many benefits for the body and mind, including:
- Slowing heart rate
- Lowering blood pressure
- Slowing your breathing rate
- Improving digestion
- Maintaining normal blood sugar levels
- Reducing activity of stress hormones
- Increasing blood flow to major muscles
- Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain
- Improving concentration and mood
- Improving sleep quality
- Lowering fatigue
- Reducing anger and frustration
- Boosting confidence to handle problem

Introducing the Bodecare Relaxation Eye Pillow in Lavender
The Bodecare Relaxation Eye Pillow has won a beautyheaven.com.au BEST IN BEAUTY Award for 2019, and with good reason!
As a busy mum, it can be hard to find the time and space for some YOU time, but if you can increase the potency of every little opportunity you get, your body, mind and spirit will reap the benefits. A little addition like this pillow is a wonderful way to maximise your relaxation time!
Ingredients: This lovely little pillow is made of dried Australian lavender and rice.
As someone who is gluten sensitive, I’m often concerned about the contents of wheat in heat packs, so I love the fact that this contains rice instead.
Lavender has long been used to provide many therapeutic benefits, including relaxing the central nervous system.
Scent: The beautiful lavender aroma of the pillow is deeply relaxing, and is not too overpowering or too subtle.
Weight: The pillow provides a decent weight over the eye lids, and it felt like I was in a pitch black room. So after meditating for 30 minutes, I got quite a shock when I took it off! I think this really helped me to deeply relax into the meditation.
Material: The pillow has an unbleached calico middle, and an outer cover in cotton blend that can easily be removed if it requires a wash. The material is very smooth, adding the luxurious feel.
This pillow can be used for a laying down meditation, as I do. Other suggestions are for the savansana pose at the end of your yoga session, or during a yoga nidra practice in which you are laying down and methodically passing your awareness through each part of your body.
