Intuition is the supra-logic that cuts out all the routine processes of thought and leaps straight from the problem to the answer – Robert Graves
This post is a little out of the realm of health coaching, but definitely more around the holistic side of life. I’ve been inspired to share my thoughts on intuition, as I am currently undertaking an 8 week program on Living Intuitively run by The Little Sage.
It’s been such a special time for me to go inward and find out more about myself and my purpose, and to build self-trust. I’m currently in Week 3, and I’ve already noticed a difference in the way I meditate. I’ve been on a quest to meditate for 2 years now, with varying success. But suddenly I have found it much easier to reach that relaxation state where my entire focus is inward. I feel like I am connecting with my intuition – my “true” self.
What is intuition? Let’s ask Dr Deepak Chopra…
Why might intuition help you on your health journey?
Prior to my healing journey, I was a Weight Watchers Addict. For those of you not familiar with the Weight Watchers program, they have created an amazing online tool which you can track your Points (similar to calorie counting) and exercise. Every week, I would do up a menu plan for each week and then use the Tracker to record exactly what I was going to eat for the next 7 days. I ate at the same time every day, regardless of whether I was hungry. If it was a freezing cold day and my Tracker said cold salad for lunch, it didn’t matter how much I wanted a warm soup, I would stick to the Tracker. I religiously tracked every single mouthful for 3 years (with the exception of 2 overseas holidays)!
Now, without criticising the Weight Watchers program or weekly menu planning, my issue was that I had completely lost touch with my cravings, my desires and my nutritional deficiencies! Your body will try to correct an imbalance by sending you a message in the form of a craving.
Cravings are your insight to what your body wants in order to heal.
Find out what you are craving by taking a breath and “going within”. Sometimes it might be a true food-based craving, caused by a nutritional deficiency. Sometimes it might be comfort – are you feeling lonely? Sometimes it might be down time – are you feeling overstretched? There are plenty of resources on deciphering cravings (and it’s inspiring me to dedicate a whole blog post to it – but in the meantime, do some googling).
I have found that knowing what you really want, and why you want it, makes the process so much more satisfying! You are giving your body what it wants, so you feel much more “whole” and much less to binge.
Building your intuition
Building your intuition will not only help you feel and decipher cravings, but it may also help with:
- Self-confidence and self-trust
- Body image concerns
- Eating disorders
- Stress management
I highly recommend checking out the amazing resources on The Little Sage for tips on how you can build your intuition.
